Five for Friday

I'm linking up with Doodle Bugs Teaching for Five for Friday.  This week was our first week back to school, and it hasn't been particularly good for me.  Plus, it feels like it's been 2 weeks combined without a break.  But I'm going to try to come up with 5 good things to say.  I can't say I'll come up with anywhere near 5 pictures though.

A quick overview of my week:  My dog, Molly, came inside Saturday and wouldn't wag her tail.  My dog always wags her tail.  So when I tried to investigate, she cried out and I knew it was really bothering her.  So I finally got an appointment with the vet for Tuesday, and they said it was more than likely just a tail sprain.  They gave her Tramadol, and apparently I shouldn't be trusted with my own dog because I can't read a prescription bottle.  Yikes.  I gave her a whole tablet instead of a half.  How dumb am I?  I started back at my grad school classes this week.  Both of my classes are considered "hybrid" classes.  One is 60% in class and 40% online.  The other is 70% online and 30% in class.  I already hate it.  I went to the first face to face class last night hoping it would make me feel better but all it did was piss me off when she mentioned that it was a "choice" to take a hybrid class.  You know, except, they haven't offered an actual class the last 3 semesters.  So, I'm quite upset.  If I didn't have to have this class to get my Masters, I would seriously consider dropping it.  I've never dropped a class before.  Ugh.  Thanks for letting me vent.

So... my 5:

1.  Before Christmas, my computer teacher at school had a bunch of us come and re-image our computers because the district bought some new memory for them which took them from 1GB of RAM to 4GB of RAM.  I finally sucked it up and upgraded to Windows 7 from XP.  My laptop is 4 1/2 years old, and it was sooooooooo slow.  It's so much faster now!  However, it kept crashing.  So our technology "guru" came to fix it and my Smartboard, and he found that the memory was a little loose, so he pushed it in all the way, and my computer hasn't crashed since!  I'm so excited.  I keep opening programs like iTunes or Smart Notebook, which used to take forever, and I count the number of seconds they take to open.  I'm sure my kiddos think I'm crazy.  But it's so fast!

2.  I love it when we do calendar, and my students figure out we're getting ready to do calendar, and I hear one of them quietly say "yes!"  Or I'll call them to the carpet and they get all excited because it's calendar time.  I swear, it's the part of the day when they are the most engaged.  I love calendar time too, so I'm not sure if it's rubbing off on them or if they just really like calendar time too.  But I'm glad they do!

This is an old picture, but it shows my obsession over fabric!  I love the stuff!  Can't get enough!  I'm in trouble now that I own a sewing machine!

3.  I stopped at JoAnn Fabrics the other night on the way home for class, and they had their red tag fabric marked down 50%.  I bought a few things because they were super cheap without a particular reason for using it.  I got home and remembered that I wanted some fabric because I wanted to cover around my computer table.  So I went to school, measured, and found it was 72" long.  I only bought 2 yards of fabric, so I went back, but they didn't have the fabric I wanted.  I found another fabric, though, and initially the girl working there thought there was only 2 1/2 yards.  We were trying to find some creative way to possibly create a border for the fabric to make it work, but found nothing.  So I decided I wanted it anyway (it was $2 a yard and super cute) and when she unfolded it, there was 3 yards and 16 inches because it was folded! Score!  So now I have to figure out how I want to hang the fabric to put it on the table.  I'm so excited to make a little curtain for my computer table- I have some stuff under there and the cables hanging down are just unsightly.  Can't wait to get started on it!

4.  Speaking of computers, my Donors Choose project was funded!  I have 6 Chromebook computers heading my direction!  I needed some new headphones for them, so I put up a project the other day to get a few pairs and a thing to charge them.  They were funded today by an old friend from college!  I am seriously chomping at the bit waiting for my computers to get here! :-)

5.  I am beginning to work on a little unit I'm creating on informational writing, and I asked my librarian and computer teacher about certain aspects of it.  They both jumped on it, and my librarian began working on gathering facts about whales with my students using an encyclopedia yesterday.  She said they did such a great job, and she explained the chart they created and gave me some suggestions about what she thought might work with my students.  I am so excited that they did a great job, and I love when my awesome little students and their smart little brains rub off on other teachers and make them excited and happy.  Plus, they figured out what "spyhopping" meant today and I was super excited about that too!

Sorry, this is mostly typing and not a lot of pictures, but I wasn't exactly planning on doing this so I didn't have any pictures planned.  I've never done this before!  Maybe next week... :-)

Have a wonderful weekend!

  1. Oh Erica! I am so sorry your week wasn't the best and brightest for you. Going to school after working all day is so hard! You can do it! Getting your Masters will make it all worth it! Congrats on the Chrome books and headphones from Donors Choose! I'm jealous! I haven't written a project for awhile. Maybe I need to get on that. You have inspired me! I am a new follower!

    1. I know, my poor dog! She looked so pathetic when she wouldn't wag her tail. She is feeling better now! Thanks!

Yeah, I love it when my technology works! My SmartBoard is still broken though. Needs a new module? I considered doing calendar on my SmartBoard but I like having the pocket charts and dry erase boards and such, and the kids have a hard time reaching the SmartBoard since it is so high up. :-/

I am already a follower of your blog! :-) Thanks for following me!

    2. Thank you for being a follower of my blog. It is weird how I am not showing up on the list of blogs you follow. I have had to follow several people again lately. I had to follow you twice before it actually worked...weird Blogger!

I hope you are having a great Sunday and I hope Molly's tail is better. =)

    3. I have some people I follow through Friend Connect, and some I have followed through my Google Reader by putting in the link to the blog. They even show up in my reader separately. I think it's weird! But I promise your blog comes up in my reader. Maybe I should go back and follow you through Friend Connect so I show up as a follower?

Yes, Molly seems to be feeling much better! Thanks! Hope you have a great week back at work!

    1. Well I'm glad that I'm not the only one! It just seemed like the people who I looked at had a ton of pictures on theirs and I felt inadequate!
